Wayne Shorter

I somehow got on the email list of Lion’s Roar, which is “an independent non-profit foundation whose mission is to communicate Buddhist wisdom and practices in order to benefit people’s lives and our society, and to support the development of Buddhism in the modern world.”

It’s OK, I’m happy to be there. I like their articles and interviews.

I was browsing their website one day and discovered this: “Remembering Wayne Shorter, Rogue Philosopher (1933-2023).” I was surprised at first, but shouldn’t have been. I knew that Herbie Hancock was involved in Nichiren Buddhism and that Herbie–who was turned on to Buddhism by bassist Buster Williams–and Wayne were long-time collaborators. So it shouldn’t have been surprising that Wayne became involved in Buddhism to the extent that Lion’s Roar would want to profile him.

You can read an essay that Wayne and Herbie wrote together titled “To the Next Generation of Artists,” which was published as part of Lion’s Roar’s “best-of publication” Awaken Your Heart & Mind.
